Bell’s palsy is a type of facial paralysis that results in a temporary inability to control the facial muscles on the affected side of the face. The cause of Bell’s palsy is unknown. Risk factors include diabetes, a recent upper respiratory tract infection, and pregnancy. Diagnosis is based on a person’s appearance and ruling out other possible causes. Other conditions that can cause facial weakness include brain tumor, stroke, Ramsay Hunt syndrome type 2, myasthenia gravis, and Lyme disease.
Bell’s palsy is the most common cause of one-sided facial nerve paralysis (70%). It occurs in 1 to 4 per 10,000 people per year. It most commonly occurs in people between ages 15 and 60.Males and females are affected equally.

Symptoms of bell’s palsy

The onset of Bell’s Palsy is always sudden. The symptoms include weakness or numbness of face on one side, drooping of face to one side, drooling of saliva, Lachrymation(watering from eyes) or dryness of eyes due to inability to close eye on affected side, pain about the jaw and behind ear, sensitive hearing, inability to have a taste of food, and loss of facial expressions like frowning and smiling. Other symptoms include difficulty in eating and speech.

1. Hypericum –

Homeopathic treatment for Bell’s Palsy due to injury to nerve. Tingling, numbness or burning sensation on the affected side of the face.

2. Ignatia-

Bell’s Palsy due to grief. It is very beneficial in Bell’s Palsy cases triggered by grief too. Patient may also complain of frequent biting inside of cheeks while talking or swallowing. Mouth filled with excess of saliva. Other symptoms of grief like weeping, brooding and sadness are also present.

3. Cadmium Sulph –

Bell’s Palsy due to Apoplexy; that means paralysis arising from a sudden haemorrhagic condition.The patient will have a distorted face and the swallowing of food is also difficult for such persons. Patient has difficulty in speaking properly. And there is also an inability to close the eye on the affected side.

4. Aconite –

Homoeopathic medicine Aconite is prescribed in the initial stages of this Bell’s Palsy condition especially when paralysis seems to have set in after exposure to a cold draft. Patients who can benefit from aconite often also complain of a tingling sensation on the affected side of the face.

5. Agaricus –

This remedy may be indicated in Bell’s palsy when the facial muscles on one side are stiff, and grimacing or twitching occurs in other parts of the face. excitable, with senses that are overacute. Many patients who need this remedy have deep anxiety about their health.

6. Cocculus –

One-sided facial paralysis, with pain or tension felt in the other cheek, especially when opening the mouth, suggests a need for this remedy. Weakness, dizziness, or numbness are other indications. The person may feel worse from lack of sleep or from being emotionally upset.
